Though
the site is already a designated open space, the demolition of two buildings
will create a larger contiguous space within which to develop a significant
neighborhood park for the Area IV neighborhood. The decision to close
Clark Street between Dickinson and Harvard Street also results in a
larger open space.
The
park will retain some of its programmed features such as the tennis
court and the community gardens, but will be enlivened and enriched
with the introduction of new ones.
The
west edge of the site is a fragrant plant border, providing beauty as
well as a visual buffer between the park and its neighbors.
The
informal field, while not large enough for highly programmed athletics,
will allow for pick-up games and a place to run around. The water feature
will provide activity and movement as well as a place to cool off in
hot weather. Play will occur in two areas: a formalized playground and
a sculptural garden providing opportunities for imaginative play as
well as a quiet place to read.
