Once known as Boston's "other green monster," the Central Artery was a 6 lane elevated highway slicing through the heart of Downtown Boston. The Central Artery/Tunnel Project rebuilt the Central Artery underground, releasing over 50 acres of land above and adjacent to the new highway, and reconnecting Downtown Boston to its historic waterfront. CSS Principals directed urban design as well as many aspects of landscape architecture for this 7.5 mile corridor which features both tunnels and viaducts passing through, over and under multiple historic neighborhoods, national register properties, parks and historic water courses.
