Creating public open space was the guiding principle of the design for a new underground parking facility in Amherst. The project addressed the town's need for more centrally located parking while improving the streetscape and pedestrian connections through the popular restaurant and shopping district. Surface amenities include additional parking, a paved plaza area, table seating, and quiet gathering spaces for local business people. The garage headhouse is integrated with the pedestrian focused landscape through its relationship with the existing local architecture. The design team worked with artist Ritsuko Taho on the installation of her "Poem Windows" which are built into the exterior of the central headhouse to the garage.
