In anticipation of an unprecedented growth spurt estimated to result in the town population increasing from 50,000 in 2007 to 80,000 by 2025, Chapel Hill, NC prepared a long range transit plan. A town policy for "ubiquitous transit access" to decrease auto dependency led to a plan encompassing services ranging from high investment rail and/or bus corridors to express bus service to enhanced local bus service. CSS assessed the potential for 20+ sites on three proposed radial bus rapid transit (BRT) corridors. The study grouped the diverse potential development locations into a series of site typologies. For each typology, CSS developed design guidelines, including density, massing, scale, building form, setbacks and parking. For five major sites representing each typology, CSS prepared detailed site plans illustrating the design guidelines and buildout analysis.
