Summer and Congress Streets are being reconstructed as part of Boston's Crossroads Initiative. Envisioned as "21st Century Streets," the design will enliven these significant streets linking the redeveloping, formerly industrial waterfront district with Downtown Boston and the newly constructed Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway. As these streets are located within a recently designated historic district, historic issues are significant to the design. Improvements will include street tree plantings, unique pedestrian furnishings, a wayfinding system, bicyclists accommodations, lighting, pavement and additional street crossings. Infrastructure set in place for public art will ensure that the street will be memorable and will reflect the arts community of which it is a part.
