Tackling the urban design of Melnea Cass Boulevard, a primary connector between the Longwood Medical Area and Interstate 93, is no small task. Designed in conjunction with several major mixed-use developments along Melnea Cass, the plan proposes a shift from a vehicle dominated model to an enriched pedestrian one consistent with Boston’s Complete Streets Initiative. Melnea Cass is being redesigned to better accommodate bicyclists and the Harbor Trail, encourage pedestrian activity, allow for Bus Rapid Transit and serve existing neighbors and future development. The plan will balance all modes of transportation and realize a unified vision for this urban boulevard. The work includes plantings, improved pedestrian routes, new pavements, site furnishings, lighting, intersection treatments, and signage.
