Squirrel Brand Park, Cambridge, MA

Squirrel Brand Park is the third of four parks to be designed and built as a result of the Area IV Master Plan done by CSS.

An intensive community process took place involving neighbors, community organizations and an active community gardening group. As a result, this precious 1/3 acre site in the densest neighborhood of Cambridge accommodates park goers of all ages and interests.

The Squirrel Brand Company produced nuts and candies on this site from 1915-1999 and the company’s history is incorporated in the granite pavers along the primary walkway leading from the street to the building.

Sculptural play equipment dots the lawn and the community gardens accommodate 35 active gardeners. Perennial beds add texture, color and scent to the street edge and sitting areas. The fruiting woody plant species were chosen for their fruit production to conceptually reinforce the activity in the community gardens.
