CSS is proud to receive a 2021 Boston Society of Landscape Architects Design Award for our redesign of Audubon Circle, an important link in Frederick Law Olmsted’s Emerald Necklace at the intersection of Beacon Street and Park Avenue in Boston’s Fenway-Kenmore neighborhood, as well as a Green Infrastructure Demonstration Project led by the Boston Water and Sewer Commission to protect the City’s water quality and better prepare for 21st-century realities of climate change. The resulting landscape and streetscape design satisfies multi-faceted program priorities, creating a vibrant open space that reconnects to city and neighborhood, while embracing urban resiliency as a defining feature within the landscape.
Jury Comments: The jury appreciated this collaboration of landscape design and site engineering, resulting in a clean, well-executed project, with nicely integrated stormwater treatment. The project is successful in the management of an incredibly complex circulation challenge, while respecting and reflecting the history of the intersection, forming a strong connection to the river, and providing terraced planting that is simple but elegant and complementary to the overall design.
