Hanover High School

Hanover, MA

Description

Working with the School Building Committee and the design team, CSS developed a site design that both conforms to Massachusetts Collaborative for High Performance Schools (MA-CHPS) requirements and provides maximum benefit for the school’s next 50 years. A need to provide teachers, students, and visitors a sense of place on this flat site led to a design that incorporates a significant program within a framework of New England canopy trees. The site program includes a new multi-sport stadium as well as field hockey, lacrosse, baseball and softball fields.

Circulation was developed for pedestrians, bicyclists, buses, and cars. A Plane Tree lined drive leads to the school’s main entrance. Along the way, visitors experience native plantings in basins and meadows, a central green and parking tucked within a grove of Honey Locusts. A Sugar Maple lined “walk-of-fame” links front and back sports fields with locker room entrances and a central courtyard. Adjoining the interior gathering space, the courtyard provides seating for lunchtime use and outdoor teaching. A traditional New England stone wall and dry meadow complete the view from the school’s interior.
