Newington TOD Plan

Newington, CT

Description

Newington Junction will be one of only three stations serving both the Connecticut Fastrak (CTfastrak) Busway connecting Hartford and New Britain, and the “Knowledge Corridor” rail line connecting New Haven and Hartford, CT with Springfield, MA. Building on our earlier Transit Oriented Development Plan for twelve stations along the CTfastrak Line, CSS developed a TOD Plan for Newington Junction. The ¼ mile radius around the station includes a significant amount of underutilized industrial land, much of it with poor access and limited visibility. The plan introduces a new internal roadway to create commercial and residential parcels with better access and frontage and a new pedestrian and vehicular link across the busway and rail tracks. Pedestrian and bicycle-friendly streets lead directly to the station. Active plazas at the CTfastrak station are visible from both bus and train platforms, as well as from Willard Avenue, the major through-street. A new multi-use trail linking the site to the regional trail system is integrated with the station and leads people through the plaza, by the retail uses.
