Description
What is a 21st Century Street and how does one achieve it in a 19th-century neighborhood? These are just some of the questions the City of Boston seeks to answer through the City’s Crossroads Initiative. Geographically positioned as connectors between downtown Boston’s Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway and the fast-expanding Fort Point Channel neighborhood, Summer & Congress Streets provide the perfect opportunity to explore solutions to these questions. The streets are located within the Fort Point Channel Historic District and design improvements addressed historic importance as well as planned use.
Planned improvements include bicycle accommodations, street tree plantings, unique pedestrian furnishings, a wayfinding system, lighting, pavements, and additional street crossings. Infrastructure set in place for public art will ensure that the street will be memorable and will reflect its location in an arts community.
